“It’s okay for a human to train a dog but not okay for a dog to train a human.”

Tricks

Dogs need many chances to master a skill!

Sit: hold a treat above the nose while saying “sit”, then reward with the treat when the dog sits and say “good sit”

Down: hold a treat to the dog’s nose and slowly lower the treat to the floor while saying “down”, then reward with the treat when the dog lays down and say “good down”

Stay: tell your dog to “sit”, then put out one hand in a stop motion while saying “stay”, then walk a few steps away, then come back and reward with a treat and say “good stay”

Crate: hold a treat in front of your dog’s nose and lead him/her to the crate while saying “crate”, when the dog goes in and stays for at least 2 seconds reward with the treat and say “good crate”

Bad Behavior

Barking: give “crate” command

Eating off the floor: respond with a firm “don’t”

Jumping on people: turn your back and say “don’t”

Begging for attention: say “don’t” until he/she sits down, then reward with a pet and say “yes”

Health

Vomiting: If your dog keeps throwing up and you can’t cure it, mix water with his/her kibble and feed 3-4 times per day.

General health: brush teeth weekly, monthly flea/tick treatment, monthly heart worm medication, clean ears, daily exercise (i.e., walk, run, fetch, dog park)

Vet recommendations: Belmont Pet Hospital; Banfield Pet Hospital
